From Knowing to Doing: Embracing the Power of Applied Knowledge

I recently had an eye-opening conversation with my brilliant friend Cassandra (you can check her work out here) and she shared a quote by Dale Carnegie that struck a chord with me: "Knowledge isn't power until it is applied."

This simple yet profound statement made me pause and reflect on my own journey. It got me thinking about how I historically have found myself stuck in the never-ending cycle of information overload and imposter syndrome. I'm constantly consuming new knowledge, without taking meaningful action. It became clear to me that knowledge alone is not enough; it is through the application of knowledge that true power and transformation emerge.

Sound familiar? Well, buckle up because we're about to dive into the real power of applied knowledge.

Raise your hand if you've ever fallen into the trap of gathering knowledge without actually doing anything with it. It's easy to get caught up in the pursuit of learning, accumulating facts, and analyzing our feelings. We may have a high level of awareness and possess a wealth of knowledge, but unless we take action, it just gets lost in the shuffle of the next thing we learn.

The danger lies in the illusion of progress without actual implementation, leading to frustration and a lack of integration.

Here's the secret: knowledge becomes truly powerful when we put it into action. It's not enough to have a head full of facts and ideas; we need to bridge the gap between knowing and doing, and then actively apply it in our lives. When we take inspired action, we bring our insights to life, and that’s when the magic happens.

So, how do we break free from the endless loop of learning without doing? Here are a few practical steps to help you harness the power of applied knowledge:

Get Clear on Your Goals: A practice I did recently was envisioning I was in a cafe 5 years from now. I wrote to myself and told myself all the amazing things I’d done and accomplished in my business. Knowing where I want to be in 5 years helps me know if the actions I’m taking now are going to support that end goal or not.

Start Small: You don’t need to overhaul and implement everything you’ve learned in one week - we’re trying to get you out of burnout, not into more of it! Start with small, manageable steps that you can easily integrate into your daily routine or check off your to-do list.

Embrace Imperfection: Let go of the need to be perfect and fear of failure. One of the courses I took spoke a lot about imperfect action, which was a very hard pill for me to swallow. Trust me, it gets easier the more you practice. Do your best to show up real versus “right” and stay true to yourself. Embrace those missteps as learning opportunities and use them as a way to course-correct as you go.

Reflect and Pivot: Regularly check in with yourself and evaluate your progress. What's working? What needs tweaking? Reflect on your experiences and adjust your approach accordingly. It's all about finding what works & feels best for you in your business.

Stop Crowdsourcing: One of my biggest challenges was getting out of the crowdsourcing mentality. I felt everyone knew more than I did, so I needed to poll all of the people around me before I could make a choice. What that ended up doing was creating a level of distrust in my own instincts and I received so many conflicting perspectives that I had indecision anxiety and just stayed stagnant.

If you find yourself in a similar position where you’re constantly seeking validation from others and feeling overwhelmed by conflicting opinions, remember to trust your own instincts. You can seek the guidance of a few trusted friends or mentors, gather their perspectives, and then tune in to what truly feels right for you.
