Creating My Unconventional Life On Purpose.
Having freedom of time & location is so fundamentally important to me that I’ve created a business where I get to stand in that value.
As I type this, I have clothes spread all over my bed for my upcoming trip overseas.
This will be my 4th country this year and I haven’t had to use (or burn through) paid vacation time.
I haven’t had to ask permission.
My client work has still gotten done.
I’ve still signed new clients.
I’ve still made money.
Now, it isn’t as glamorous as it can seem. It isn’t a vacation, it’s just me, living my life in another place.
And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
My keys to success while working on the road?
✨ Adjust your business model to support your ambitions. Maybe you’re a 1:1 coach who has back to back video calls, Monday-Friday. Try moving into a group coaching program where you have a handful of 1:1 clients and then 1-2 group calls a week.
✨ When possible, plan longer stays in places vs more places. A longer stay will help you be able to see & do all the things you want, while juggling working.
✨ Be intentional about your downtime. Going off of the second point, if you’re doing a longer stay somewhere, you’ll be able to “rationalize” a rest day. The first trip I did, I was moving cities every 5 days (with two backpacks), doing client work, trying to be a tourist, and figuring out public transportation in every new place. Don’t be like me - allow yourself to ease into it and truly see what life is like in the new location.
✨ Sometimes it pays to splurge on the nice Airbnb. I’m a huge proponent of being comfortable while I travel and also, sometimes it feels hard to pay the big bucks on a private apartment when I could pay $30 for a room in a hostel. I have now gotten myself into a system where I do a combination of both, depending on what meetings I have, what my intention for the trip is, and where my energy level is.
✨ If you’re a service provider and you have clients messaging you throughout the work day - pay for the international data plan. Just do it and thank me later. I have distinct memories of wrapping up my “computer work” and hitting the streets of Lisbon to explore. My data was on and I was able to pause my exploring periodically and reply to messages. My clients & teams got what they needed from me and I was able to be out & enjoying the gorgeous weather.
